School Workshops
The Fresh Air Club provides outdoor learning workshops to schools during term time offering bespoke packages of activities linked to the national curriculum. We have designed several programmes of activities for all year groups in partnership with schools specifically targeting the national curriculum objectives along with ‘topic’ work. Our activities include:
Ancient fire lighting
Den and shelter building
Navigation using man made and natural methods
Bug hunts, bug house and bird feeders
Whittling wood to make tent pegs
Tree identification and their uses
Team building/cooperative adventure games
Knots and paracord survival bracelet making
We have held ‘topic’ days at schools in:
Stone and Iron Age
Ancient Greeks
Romans
Vikings
The Great Fire of London
Supported book weeks with activities linked to specific books being read in class. ( See our blog re how we supported ‘Wolf Brother’ by Michelle Paver for Year 6 )
We have encouraged children to embrace the natural environment they are surrounded by in school, their communities and the big wide world.
We also support science based activities in an outdoor setting, for example, ‘changing states of matter’ and ‘plant/tree ID and anatomy’ giving children the freedom to learn via alternative methods in an outdoors setting.
Call or email us to discuss how we can engage your children to support their curriculum learning.
1-1 Sessions
Sometimes children struggle in big group settings for a variety of different reasons and we offer tailored 1-1 and small group sessions to help these children develop new skills to assist their learning and development in school and at home. Our sessions are designed to be fun and interactive and help to develop:
Confidence and resilience
Self worth and compassion
Trust and relationship building
Communication and social skills
Independent thinking and problem solving
Improved fine motor skills
Positive experiences/relationships with adults
We use an outdoor setting to ensure the children feel they have space to express themselves and to feel comfortable which helps them to learn and develop and in a warm trusting atmosphere.
Special Events
We run special one off special events in schools, whether it is to celebrate the end of the school term or to support children that have not been able to attend other external school trips or to work with specific year groups. We can provide exciting ‘have a go’ sessions for the children which include:
Archery
Fire Lighting
Shelter Building
Ancient crafts
Campfire experiences including marshmallows
Give us a call to discuss your requirements further. We can tailor other activities to support you in addition to those highlighted above.
Residential Trips
We offer residential experiences for schools in the beautiful New Forest in Hampshire and can also offer more ‘wild camping’ experiences in a private woodland near Romsey.
Our residential trips offer children the opportunity to ‘rewild’ in a safe outdoor woodland setting undertaking a number of fun and engaging activities. Here is a small selection of the types of activities we offer:
Shelter building
Fire lighting
Archery
Air rifle shooting
Campfire cooking
Nature hikes including natural navigation techniques
Whittling
Natural cord making using stinging nettles
Crafts activities
We provide a safe environment for the children to have space to play and explore whilst enjoying the range of activities that we can provide.
The children and teachers, will sleep comfortably in bell tents and all meals will be cooked over a campfire which the children can help us prepare. Everyone has the opportunity to enjoy hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and a few songs around the fire to round off each day.
This experience is one that the children and staff will always remember. Please contact us for more details or to discuss your schools requirements further.
